Physiotherapists typically work in private clinics or as part of the rehabilitation department in a hospital.

Private Clinics
In Manitoba you don’t need a doctor’s referral to see a physiotherapist in a private clinic. To find a private physiotherapist, look for “Physiotherapist” in the Yellow Pages. Most extended health plans cover physiotherapy treatment. To learn whether your plan covers physiotherapy services, contact your private health insurance provider.

Hospitals
The cost of physiotherapy treatments received through a Manitoba hospital is covered by Manitoba Health. Some facilities request a doctor’s referral, so ask about the hospital policy when contacting the physiotherapy or rehabilitation department.

In a hospital setting, physiotherapists provide both “in-patient” and “out-patient” services. Physiotherapists work with patients who have persistent pain, heart and lung disease, amputations, arthritic joints, burns, traumatic workplace injuries, athletic injuries, and motor vehicle accident injuries.  Physiotherapists also help people who have suffered stroke, brain injury, spinal cord and nerve injury, or cancer. In addition, physiotherapists help people who have pre and post surgical needs, pregnancy needs, or impaired urinary function.  Physiotherapists are leaders on the subject of disease prevention, including the prevention of illness related to obesity.

Physiotherapists are required to be licensed with the College of Physiotherapists of Manitoba to practice in the province. Membership in the Manitoba Physiotherapy Association, however, is voluntary.
